Recently, South Korean media TheElec reported that Samsung Electronics plans to launch more household appliances using UV LEDs in 2021.

The report mentioned that Samsung made a decision in September to use UVC LEDs with wavelengths between 250nm and 280nm for disinfection in more of its home electronic products. Prior to this, Samsung Electronics introduced a UVC LED sterilizer that can charge and sterilize mobile phones.

Samsung currently only installs UVC LEDs on some of its home appliances (including custom refrigerators). And with UVA LED (315nm to 380nm) is usually used in the production of printed circuit boards. UVB LED (280nm to 315nm) is used in the biological and medical fields.

Samsung’s decision to expand the application of UVC LEDs is due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with rival LG Electronics, Samsung has been relatively passive in applying UVC LEDs to its equipment.

Samsung is expected to use UVC LEDs in about 20% to 30% of its home appliances launched next year, but it has not yet finalized how many LEDs will be installed. Samsung’s home appliances mainly include refrigerators, microwave ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers and air purifiers.

In addition, it is reported that the company will outsource LEDs from South Korea and China instead of its sister company S-LED. In South Korea, companies capable of manufacturing UVC LEDs include Seoul Semiconductor and Semiconlight, and Samsung may seek one of them.
